La poliacrilamida, comúnmente conocida como PAM, es un polímero lineal obtenido mediante la homopolimerización de acrilamida o copolimerización con otros monómeros. Este compuesto macromolecular contiene grupos amida en sus unidades estructurales, que forman fácilmente enlaces de hidrógeno, lo que le confiere una excelente solubilidad en agua y una alta reactividad química. Se puede modificar fácilmente mediante injertos o reticulación para formar estructuras ramificadas o en red.
Al seleccionar diferentes sistemas iniciadores y comonómeros, además de controlar los parámetros de polimerización, la estructura de PAM se puede adaptar para lograr una amplia gama de propiedades físicas y químicas.
